About the Department:

The Department of Chemistry started its humble journey by offering only the HS course first. Later in 1983 and 1997 it started offering the General and Honours degree courses respectively. Well known for its excellence in teaching and research publications, the department with its highly efficient faculty members are always engaged in guiding the UG level students. Recently a modern equipped lecture theatre cum 40 seat capacity seminar room has been inaugurated in this department in addition to other normal classrooms. There are also three separate laboratories for Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry practical classes. Laboratories are well equipped with almost all the instruments as per the previous CBCS and new UG NEP 2020 curriculum. The outcome of the Department is worthy of pride. A good number of students obtain first class and even secure top ranks in the final university examinations quite consistently. Almost fifty percent of our students go for their higher education and some of them crack national level exams like IIT-JAM every year. The alumni of our department are the feathers to the crown. Every year, the ongoing batches in association with our Fellow Alumni, organise the Annual Re-union program and publish a souvenir as a memento of the event. Apart from the regular classes, the department is regular with organising seminars. One UGC sponsored National Seminar was organized by the department in 2011 to commemorate Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy and celebrate the International Year of Chemistry (2011). We had Arsenic detection arrangements through which we could serve the local people about the level of arsenic in potable water. The Department has also organized "Science Academies' Lecture Workshop" in January 2018. During the pandemic our department had offered regular classes through online mode and even arranged online laboratory workshop for the final year chemistry Hons. students from different colleges of Nadia and Murshidabad. Recently our students have gained a lot of academic experiences and interests by visiting the premier research institute IISER Kolkata on its Open day ceremony. A rich legacy of the department is in making with the efforts of all involved.
