Department of Botany

"A herbarium is better than any illustration; every botanist should make one." ……Carolus Linnaeus

About the Department:

It was back in 1993 that the department of Botany was born in the lush green campus of Chakdaha College and there has been no turning back ever since. The department has emerged to be one of the best happening educational sections not only in Chakdaha College but has proved to be a pride of the University of Kalyani for its consistent scholastic records as well. The department offered general courses to students until 2007 when it welcomed a significant improvement as holders of the degrees were awarded with honours thereafter.

The department of Botany hosts a body of erudite faculties, each armed with an in-depth knowledge of techno pedagogy, committed to the needs of the students. Currently, there are two full time faculties and four SACT teachers. The faculties have made significant research contributions in renowned national and international journals.

Cutting edge facilities that the department offers:

  • Houses both common and rare Herbarium specimens which are routinely used.
  • The departmental library is the one which is stacked ingeniously to encourage close learning and ensure to be a deft information space. At the core of the collection are books ranging to periodicals, magazines to question banks.
  • To engineer productivity and enhance research capabilities, a parley of instruments mounting from Autoclave, Hot air oven, Incubator, Serological water bath, Centrifuge, pH meter, Colorimeter, Colony counter, Herbarium press, Digital balance and Microscopes ornate the instruments room. These, however, are brought over to the laboratory as the respective time tables demand.
  • The Museum maintains a rich collection of preserved specimens displaying diversity of plants. It is utilized for conducting practical and theoretical classes.
  • Projectors for teaching and delivering presentations to make learning fun, transcending beyond the conventional chalk and talk method. Besides, it is the successful integration of ICT into the learning environment that border on the contemporary styles of pedagogy.
  • An Inoculation chamber for Microbiological work.
  • A meticulously nourished and maintained Polyhouse starring medicinal plants and spices.

Students have to go through a routine based oral presentation which help them understand their progress rate and sharpen their competitive abilities with time. The department is one that looks beyond the confines of bricks and mortars, no wonder, natural science as they name it. The plant species which now constitute the herbarium, has been collected by the students on their field trips or educational tours in different geographical locations with a mission that the pupils are not to rack brains in excruciatingly drab bookish philosophy without a connection with nature, a great impression on mind and a practical experience as well. The years 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015 were the triumphant moments for the college as students from the department ranked first class first in the University at the undergraduate level and were honoured with the UGC top rank holder scholarship. It is not much wonder that the years 2016 to 2020 have witnessed a consistent escalation in success rates.

Recently, the department has conducted a webinar entitled Challenges in Environmental Microbiology on the 31st of August, 2020. Apart from imparting knowledge, the department widely recognized as one of the top-notch divisions of Chakdaha College under the University of Kalyani, it is the combined blood and sweat of the members of academia that breakthrough success is attained, shaping a better tomorrow, an enlightened world.
