Brief History of Chakdaha College
Chakdaha College began its journey in 1972 with just 76 students in a borrowed space, offering only two courses. Over the years, it has grown tremendously. Today, the college operates with two sections, morning and day, and has nearly 8,000 students, with 51% being female. The college now offers 15 major courses under the UG-NEP-2020 curriculum. Since its inception, the college has not only increased its student strength but also significantly upgraded its infrastructure and resources. Chakdaha College currently boasts 13 well-equipped laboratories, 05 smart classrooms, 14 ICT-enabled classrooms, Learning Management System for Important books and essential study materials and a library with nearly 30,000 books.
The college was founded by Sri Haridas Mitra, the then-deputy speaker of West Bengal, and continues to be governed by capable hands. Under the able leadership of Dr. Paritosh Biswas, the Hon’ble Teacher-in-Charge, the college is striving for excellence in all areas of development. The college operates smoothly due to the dedication of its two key groups: the teaching staff, consisting of 104 members, and the non-teaching staff, comprising 32 members.
Beyond academics, the college has played a significant role in community service. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chakdaha College donated oxygen concentrators to Chakdaha State General Hospital and provided free oxygen services to local residents. The college also adopted Lodha village, assisting its 81 families with food, essential supplies, and health check-ups for women. Furthermore, the college extended fee concessions to students during the pandemic.
Chakdaha College is not limited to traditional academic teaching, the college has also offered numerous technical and career-oriented certificate courses, career counseling programs, and initiatives to enhance student skills, such as yoga, self-defense, and health awareness programs over the past five years.
On November 21, 2022, the college celebrated its Golden Jubilee year, marking the milestone with various academic, cultural, and social activities.
The college takes immense pride in its students' achievements in both academics and extracurricular activities. Every year, many students from the science discipline excel in national-level entrance examinations like JAM and CUET, getting admission to prestigious institutions such as IITs, IISc, and NITs. In addition, students consistently perform well in national, state, and university-level cultural and sports competitions. The NCC cadets are particularly recognized for their achievements, including receiving the Governor's Medal, DG Commendation Medal for Best NCC Cadet, and awards for outstanding performance in the Republic Day Parade Camp. Similarly, the college is proud of its NSS volunteers for their contributions to community service and their notable performance in the NSS National Integration Camp.
